The problem with tribe marketing...

...is the requirement to turn your real life & selfhood into a brand.

The problem with tribe marketing, SEO marketing, and influencer marketing is that your "tribe" or "community" of readers can very easily lose your sense of authenticity. Your "tribe" becomes part of a vast echo chamber of other tribe leaders selling the same products, saying the same things, and writing the same comments, which leaves zero room for new ideas to pore in or change to occur at any level.

The problem with tribe marketing is that you inevitably "influence" too much, or pitch the wrong company, and you lose yourself. Suddenly, your blog or IG or Facebook isn't as cool and fun of a place as it used to be. And you, the influencer, don't really have the transparency to talk about why, since you must keep shilling. At the same time, you must fend off competition from other thought leaders trying to take your tribe and make it their own.  So you keep up your happy online persona as the undercurrent of dissatisfaction builds.

So, what's an influence marketer to do?

When it comes to bloggers and their comment sections... should they moderate and build a faux yet respectable sense of community, all while reddit snarkers and trolls bitch (yet still click) behind your back?

Or should they not moderate their own communities, and have to constantly defend themselves and their choices, making them feel attacked, guarded, and defensive?

Huh. Tribe Marketing kinda reminds me of the emergence of Bernie Sanders and the DNC losing their shit.

In both marketing and politics, when there is dissent, the call is coming from inside the house.

So say what you want to say. Because whether others stay in the tribe or leave and cry foul from the sidelines, at the end of the day, at least YOU are the one driving that conversation. And you have something important to say.
